The Sainam" left Canton for Wuchow at 8 a.m. on Friday the 13th July with 125 native passengers and one European, a British subject, the Reverend R. J. J. MacDonald M.D., a member of the Wesleyan Missionary Society who has resided at Wuchow for many years. The steamer touched at Yun Ki, Mahning, Kumchuk and Kaukong taking 9, 2, 31 and 37 passengers at these places respectively. Dinner was served in the saloon at 6 p.m., the Captain, F.W. Joslin, the Chief Engineer, J.W. Seggie, and Dr. MacDonald being present. At about 6.45 these three were talking together on the dack outside the saloon door on the port side when they saw one of the Indian watchmen running forward towards them pursued by a Chinese with a revolver. Captain Joslin hurried aft to the watchman's help and knocked down his assailant who however sprang up and fired at him at close quarters. The bullet struck him full in the middle of the body. A number of men armed with revolvers came running up the ladder. The three Europeans accompanied by the watchmen turned back and made for the ladder leading to the wheelhouse where the arms were kept, but were headed off by a second band of pirates who had come up on the starboard side. They took refuge in the saloon, but the pirates began to pour their fire through the windows to avoid which the four men got under the table a solid teakwood one. A "stinkpot" was however thrown in, burning the Engineer considerably and rendering the position untenable. Dr. MacDonald, Captain Joslin and the Indian watchman went out by the starboard door and Mr. Seggie, the Engineer, by the port door. The latter ran the gauntlet of a number of pirates who were firing wildly and got down into the stokehold where he remained safely concealed behind
